An ally of the two men, guerrilla leader Jonas Savimbi, abruptly announced Thursday night that his UNITA fighters were once again at war with Angola's Marxist government, ending a shaky, two-month cease-fire and peace accord brokered by Rebels of Mr.

Savimbi's National Union for Total Independence of Angola, or UNITA, movement claimed Friday they had killed 77 government troops this week, the highest reported casualty figure in Angola in two months. The fighting has collapsed a vaguely worded peace accord reached June 22 at Mobutu's main palace in Gbadolite. UNITA and Angola agreed to a cease-fire and a process of national reconciliation, but sides have since disputed Filmmaker makes a slithery sales pitch By Maggie Jackson The Associated Press LONDON Hundreds of video rental shops on Friday received promotional kits for a horror movie with live snakes inside the packages, and outraged animal protection officials called the stunt "cruel and irresponsible." The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals called on Cinema International Corp. to take back the 700 reptiles. The snakes were in danger because instructions accompanying the kits had incorrectly said they did not need to be fed for their planned month-long stay in the stores, the society said.

It said it was receiving dozens of calls from unhappy shop owners. Paul Brett, CIC's marketing manager, said the snakes were intended to be kept in shops to promote a thriller about voodoo called "The Serpent and The Rainbow." The snakes were bred domestically and the company began sending them out Thursday from its London headquarters, he said. The snakes, silver with gray stripes, are not poisonous but might carry harmful parasites if they came from abroad, said RSPCA spokeswoman Diana Jones. They needed to be fed weekly, she said. While admitting there'd been "some confusion." Cinema Interna-" tional denied the snakes would harm anyone or be harmed.

"We've sent out 700 in clear, plastic, aerated boxes as conversation pieces," Mr. Brett said. "Snakes make wonderful pets." The 18- to 24-inch snakes used in the promotion came from a company called Animal Actors, which assured Cinema International they did not have to be fed for three the meaning of the accord while engaging in renewed firefights. The escalation of the Angolan war could threaten a peace agreement reached in December in which South Africa agreed to give up control of Namibia in exchange for the withdrawal of 50,000 Cuban troops from Angola. That accord ended fighting in Angola between South African and Cuban forces, as well as a 23-year civil war in Namibia.

Angered by the killing of six Cuban soldiers by UNITA on Aug. 14, Cuban leader Fidel Castro threatened this week to delay the phased withdrawal of his nation's troops. A joint statement released Friday by Mr. de Klerk and Mr. Mobutu, saying the Angolan dispute had reached a "critical state," promised that the conflict would be "followed up at the appropriate level." That suggested a round of shuttle diplomacy in southern Africa designed to revive the Gbadolite accord.

A South African government official on the chartered plane carrying Mr. de Klerk from the summit said Mr. de Klerk would raise the issue in his meeting Monday in Zambia with President Kenneth Kaunda. At the same time, the offical said, Mobutu will discuss the fighting with Angolan President Eduardo dos Santos. Both South Africa and Zaire, meanwhile, are likely to pressure Mr.

Savimbi to accept a renewed cease-fire while diplomats attempt to renegotiate the June 22 accord. The Associated Press Superintendent Freddie Drew of Britain's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals holds a Chinese rat snake in a plastic container. Hundreds of video rental shops across Britain received a promotion kit for a horror movie called "'The Serpent and the Rain- bow" containing one of the snakes months, he said. Lawrence Cane, Cinema International's marketing assistant, said: "Whenever we launch a new video title we normally send to our distributors posters, sleeves and cardboard cut-outs. With this film, we decided to send snakes.

In marketing terms it's called live points of sale." Some recipients weren't impressed. "We felt complete and utter horror," said a London video shop manager, who refused to be identified to protect his relations with the distribution company. Residents of the Soviet Baltic republics are encouraged by neighboring Poland's bold steps away from communism as they probe the limits of President Mikhail S. Gorbachev's reforms.

As more than a million Baltic residents formed a human chain this week to mourn the independence they lost to Stalin's tanks a halfcentury ago, a poster was displayed in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital: "Lithuanians and Poles: Let's Billy Graham Dear Dr. Graham: I'm afraid to go to church, because I'm sure I will make a fool of myself. I've never had anything to do with church before (either as a child or as an adult). I would like to go, because somehow feel a need for it, but can you understand why I feel the way I do? Mrs. Y.L.

Dear Mrs. Y.L.: Please don't let this fear keep you from going to church. It could be the most important step you ever take, for it could help you find true peace and joy in Christ. For one thing, you should not be afraid of being embarrassed; in many churches you will be handed a program which tells you what will take place what page num- live. He said the snake, which "just appeared out of the had been returned to the distribution company's animal supplier.

Brett said the snakes were handdelivered in boxes marked "Live Animal," and claimed shop owners were warned by ads in the trade press and calls from sales agents. At the end of the month, they were to be collected by the company, although if shop owners were unhappy, they could call an emergency number and have them picked up. "I have spoken to three (shop owners) who were less than happy," Mr. Brett said. Unite Against the Common Enemy." It was not clear whether the message was directed at Poles living in their homeland or the Polish minority in Lithuania, but there was little doubt about the "common Soviet-style communism.

Do you have any friends who are Christians? They would undoubtedly be delighted to accompany you. But I want you to know something else that is very important.

Why go to church? One reason is to learn about God and his love for us and that's what I pray you will learn. But you don't have to wait to find a church to discover this. You see, God knows all about your background. He loves you, although you have never loved him in return. And he wants you to turn to him and commit your life to Christ.

Yes, God wants to receive you just as you are. He wants to forgive the past, and he wants you to come to know him in a personal way. Today you can receive Christ by telling God you know you need him and you want to serve him.
