Growing up in a small town in rural Pennsylvania, Mangos weren’t a fruit that we found at our local grocery stores when I was a child, admittedly I never even tried a mango until I was well into my 30’s! But I quickly grew to love them and incorporate them into so many delicious recipes like my Sweet & Spicy Tomato Mango Salsa, Easy Frozen Mango Margarita, Fermented Mango Habanero Hot Sauce, Homemade Mango Syrup, Spicy Mango Sauce and even Mango Iced Tea!

Learning how to make fresh salsa can seem intimidating but I promise you it’s super easy. In fact with this mango salsa, the hardest part is selecting a perfectly ripe mango!

How to Pick a Ripe Mango

Picking the perfect mango is honestly as easy as selecting a ripe avocado, unripe mangoes are very firm and become softer as they ripen. Ripe mangoes will also sometimes boast a fruity aroma at their stem ends. Mangos, despite what we typically think, are always in season here in the United States. We’re lucky to have access to many different varieties of mangos, and because they each have their own unique seasons, we can enjoy mangos all year long!

Making Fresh Salsa at home is so very, very easy, just chop, toss, and eat!

And if you are a little “picky” about things being uniform sized (like me) or you don’t have the most amazing knife-skills, I recommend THIS chopper for making sure all my chopped goodies are the same size. And it helps to prevent you from crying when cutting up the onions!

If a jalapeño mango black bean salsa is not hot enough for you, feel free to kick it up to a habanero mango black bean salsa instead. Just promise to be careful with those ultra hot habanero peppers! And of course, if you are very sensitive to spicy foods, use any color bell peppers, too!

How to Prevent Hot Pepper Burns

In fact, can you PLEASE promise me you’ll always wear gloves when you are handling any hot peppers, ok?? My hands got burned by hot peppers a few years ago, they were in extreme pain for over 12 hours, you don’t need to learn that less the hard way, like me, just wear THESE gloves. They are also awesome if you have an aversion to handling raw meat too!
